How to type a bullet point on Windows

You can type a bullet point on Windows with Alt + 0149 or the shorter Alt + 7: hold Alt, type the number on the numeric keypad and release to get •. Both produce the same bullet character, and both work in Notepad, browsers and Office.

All codes for •U+2022

Quick answer

Hold Alt, type 0149 (or 7) on the keypad → •

Step by step

  1. Switch on Num Lock

The keypad has to type numbers, not move the cursor.

  2. Hold the left Alt key

Keep it pressed for the whole code.

  3. Type 0149 or 7

Use the numeric keypad. 0149 comes from Windows-1252, 7 from the original PC character set.

  4. Release and add a space

Let go of Alt, then add a space before your text: • First item.

Alt + 0149 vs Alt + 7

Both insert U+2022, the standard bullet. Alt + 7 is shorter to type and comes from the pictures the IBM PC showed for control codes. Alt + 0149 is the Windows-1252 code and behaves the same everywhere that accepts alt codes. If Alt + 7 ever gives you nothing (a few programs ignore the low codes), use 0149.

Bullets in plain-text fields

Typed bullets are most useful where there is no list button: email subject lines, text messages, social bios, LinkedIn “About” sections and code comments. Start each line with • and a space, and press Shift + Enter where the app sends on Enter. For something lighter, the middle dot · or the small bullets in our bullet point symbols collection work well as separators.

In Word, use a real list

For documents, Word’s list feature is better than typed bullets because it keeps indentation and wrapping neat. Type an asterisk and a space at the start of a line and Word starts a bulleted list automatically. Typed • characters are still handy inside a paragraph or a table cell; the bullet point in Word guide covers both approaches.

If you have no keypad

Press Win + . and look in the Symbols tab, type 2022 then Alt + X in Word, or copy • from the bullet point symbol page. Pinning it in clipboard history (Win + V) makes it one click away in every app.
