What does ♠ mean?
♠ is the spade, the highest-ranking suit in bridge and the suit of the famous ace of spades. The shape comes from the French card suits (pique, a pike head), not from a garden spade. It is a very old computer character: the IBM PC included it, which is why Alt + 6 still types ♠ on Windows. Its HTML entity is ♠.
