What does ⚧ mean?

The transgender symbol ⚧ (Unicode character MALE WITH STROKE AND MALE AND FEMALE SIGN) unifies three distinct arms branching from a central circle: the female cross pointing downward (♀), the male arrow pointing diagonally upper-right (♂), and a crossed arrow pointing diagonally upper-left. The crossed arrow represents individuals whose gender identity is non-binary, genderqueer, transitioning, or otherwise outside traditional binary definitions.

The design originated in the mid-1990s through activists including Holly Boswell, who envisioned an inclusive icon embracing the full spectrum of gender identities. Unicode added the glyph to version 4.1 in 2005. It is extensively used in LGBTQ+ advocacy, Pride banners, educational health materials, social media profiles, and gender-inclusive public facilities. On smartphones, adding the emoji presentation selector U+FE0F displays the glyph as the light-blue transgender emoji flag or tile.

Common uses

  • LGBTQ+ advocacy, transgender awareness campaigns, and Pride events
  • Social media bios and profiles expressing transgender identity
  • Signage for gender-neutral restrooms and inclusive facilities
  • Medical and academic papers exploring gender diversity
