What does ⅓ mean?

⅓ is one third as a single character, from the Number Forms block rather than Latin-1. That later origin means it has no Windows Alt code and a few older fonts draw it in a different style from ½ and ¼. It is useful in recipes and shares where thirds are common: ⅓ cup, a ⅓ stake. Remember that ⅓ is not exactly 0.33; in calculations type =1/3 to keep the full precision.

Common uses

  • Recipes: ⅓ cup of milk
  • Splits and shares: each partner holds ⅓
