Lenny Face ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

History of the Lenny face meme

First appearing in November 2012 on the Finnish imageboard Ylilauta before spreading rapidly across 4chan and Reddit, the lenny face—formally transcribed as ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)—is one of the most durable typographic memes on the internet. Known colloquially as “Le Lenny Face” or “Deg Deg”, this iconic character is deployed as a universal signal for innuendo, mischievous sarcasm, and playful conspiracy.

Within months of its emergence, online gamers adopted Lenny as a spam copypasta in World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and Twitch chat streams. Over the past decade, internet creators have designed hundreds of derivative variations equipped with sunglasses, wizard wands, boxing gloves, and animal ears.

The complex Unicode characters behind the smirk

What makes the Lenny face technologically intriguing is its sophisticated combination of international phonetic glyphs and non-spacing diacritics:

• Eyes: Constructed using standard degree symbol code points (°, U+00B0).
• Eyebrows & Nose: The arching eyebrows use the combining inverted double arch (U+0361), while the snout-like nose is the Latin letter small lezh (ʖ, U+0296), originally designed for the International Phonetic Alphabet. You can explore similar linguistic glyphs in our phonetic symbols directory.
• Cheeks: The subtle cheek curves use the combining acute tone mark, giving the face its recognizable asymmetry.

When and where to use Lenny in social chat

In contemporary social messaging, posting a Lenny face serves as a humorous wink or double entendre, indicating that a comment should not be taken literally. Because it relies on standard Unicode points, it pastes seamlessly across Discord channels, YouTube comments, and Twitter threads.
