How to type the not equal sign (≠) on Android
Most Android keyboards, including Gboard, do not show the not equal sign on their symbol pages. To type ≠ on Android, copy it once from this page and save it: as a personal dictionary entry in Gboard, as a text shortcut on Samsung Keyboard, or as a pinned clipboard item.
Quick answer
Copy ≠ above → Gboard settings → Dictionary → Personal dictionary → + → paste ≠ and add the shortcut neq.
Step by step
Copy ≠
Tap Copy at the top of this page.
Open Gboard’s dictionary
Gboard settings → Dictionary → Personal dictionary → choose your language.
Save it with a shortcut
Tap +, paste ≠, and type a shortcut such as neq.
Use the suggestion
When you type neq, ≠ appears in the suggestion strip. Tap it.
What Gboard does have
Gboard’s second symbols page (tap ?123, then =\<) has ÷, ×, √, π and °, but the comparison signs ≠, ≤ and ≥ are missing. The quickest permanent fix is the personal dictionary entry above; the suggestion appears as soon as you type the shortcut.
Pin it instead
If you only need ≠ for a while, copy it and open Gboard’s clipboard panel from the toolbar. Touch and hold the ≠ entry and choose Pin, and it will stay there until you remove it. You can pin ≤ and ≥ next to it for a small comparison toolkit.
On Samsung phones
Samsung Keyboard has text shortcuts in its settings (under More typing options → Text shortcuts on recent One UI versions). Add a shortcut such as neq with ≠ as the phrase. Samsung shows it as a suggestion, just like Gboard.
Using ≠ in messages
≠ is handy for quick comparisons in chats (“price ≠ value”) and for maths homework. In code, spreadsheets and search boxes, stick to != because ≠ is not an operator there. The not equal sign page explains the codes, the math symbols collection has the other comparison signs, and the Android symbols guide covers the symbols that are on the keyboard.
Frequently asked questions
Is ≠ on the Gboard keyboard?
No. Gboard’s symbol pages include ÷, × and √ but not ≠. Save it to the personal dictionary with a shortcut.
How do I type not equal to on Samsung?
Add ≠ as a text shortcut in Samsung Keyboard settings, or copy it from this page when needed.
Can I use ≠ in a Google Sheets formula?
No. Sheets uses <> for “not equal to”, for example =IF(A1<>B1,"different","same").
