The power symbols

The power symbols come from the international standard IEC 60417. Four of them joined Unicode only in version 9.0 (2016), after a public proposal pointed out they were missing; the power-off circle ⭘ already existed. Each means something specific: ⏻ (a broken circle with a line) is the toggle power button, ⏼ power on-off for a single push button, ⏽ (a line) power on, ⭘ (a circle) power off, and ⏾ (a crescent moon) sleep mode. Many fonts still lack them, so test before using them in print. The power symbol page has every code.

⌀ diameter vs Ø

Engineering drawings mark a diameter with ⌀ (U+2300), as in ⌀ 12 mm. People often type the Scandinavian letter Ø or the empty-set sign ∅ instead because they look alike, but only ⌀ is correct for diameters; see the diameter symbol for the comparison.

Electrical and circuit signs

⏚ is earth ground, ⎓ direct current and ⏦ alternating current, the same marks printed on chargers and power supplies. For resistance, Unicode has an ohm sign, though the standard recommends the Greek Ω for text. More units are in the unit symbols collection.

Media control symbols

▶ ⏸ ⏹ ⏺ ⏩ and ⏪ are the play, pause, stop, record and skip buttons. Several of them have emoji forms, so on phones they may appear as coloured buttons. For plain interface labels, pair each with text or an aria-label, because a screen reader reads ⏸ as “double vertical bar”.

Frequently asked questions

What is the power symbol called in Unicode?

The main one, ⏻, is POWER SYMBOL (U+23FB). Unicode also has ⏼ power on-off, ⏽ power on, ⭘ power off and ⏾ power sleep, all from IEC 60417.

How do I type the diameter symbol ⌀?

Copy it from this page, or in Word type 2300 and press Alt + X. In AutoCAD, the text code %%c produces a diameter sign.

What does ⏚ mean?

⏚ is the earth ground symbol used in electrical diagrams and on device labels to mark a connection to ground.

Why do some technical symbols show as boxes?

They are newer additions and many fonts do not include them. Updating your system or using a font such as Segoe UI Symbol or Noto Sans Symbols usually fixes it.
