What does mean?
The non-breaking space (Unicode name NO-BREAK SPACE, widely known as NBSP or hard space, code point U+00A0) is a primary formatting character that prevents automatic line breaks between adjacent words or symbols. In professional document publishing and typography, allowing a line wrap to orphan a numerical digit from its associated unit (such as splitting "10" and "kg" across two lines), separation of currency signs from amounts, or breaking apart personal titles (such as "Dr. Watson") impairs reader comprehension. Inserting a non-breaking space guarantees that the connected words remain tethered together on the same line as a single cohesive visual unit. It is the most universally utilized member of the Unicode space characters family and closely coordinates with punctuation symbols.
In web development, the non-breaking space serves a second indispensable role: defeating default HTML whitespace collapse. Standard web browsers collapse consecutive regular spaces, tabs, and newline characters into a single space; the non-breaking space (written as the named entity ) is exempt from collapsing, enabling authors to insert deliberate, consistent horizontal spacing in plain HTML without external CSS rules. French typography strictly mandates non-breaking spaces before high punctuation marks including colons, semicolons, exclamation marks, and inside quotation marks. In contrast to the invisible zero-width space which encourages line breaks, or the extra-wide em space used for paragraph indentation, the non-breaking space maintains standard word spacing while providing absolute control over line integrity.
Common uses
- Binding quantities to their measurement units: 100 km/h, 25 kg, 5 MB
- Preventing orphaned numbers in currency, dates, and names: $10 million, July 4, Fig. 2
- French typographic spacing before colons, question marks, and inside guillemets: « Bonjour ! »
- Preventing whitespace collapse in HTML tables, navigational breadcrumbs, and preformatted text
