Usage and pronunciation of accented C letters

The cedilla (ç) is one of the most widely recognized consonant modifiers in Western typography. Used extensively in French, Portuguese, Catalan, and Occitan, the cedilla tells the reader to pronounce the C as a soft sibilant 's' sound even when followed by the hard back vowels a, o, or u, as in français and façade.

Slavic languages use different diacritics on C to indicate affricate consonants. In Czech, Slovak, and Serbo-Croatian, the caron (č) denotes a voiceless postalveolar affricate ('ch' sound). Polish and Serbo-Croatian contrast this with the acute accent (ć) for an alveolo-palatal affricate. Turkish and Azerbaijani use the cedilla ç for the 'ch' sound instead of an 's' sound.
